What to see in Murillo de Gállego

Must-sees

Murillo de Gállego is at the far north of Zaragoza province, by the Gállego river and facing the Mallos de Riglos, reddish conglomerate towers that are a world reference for climbing. The village is small and quiet, with stone houses terraced on the hillside. Its main monument is the Romanesque church of San Salvador, and at the top is the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Liena, with a viewpoint over the mallos and the valley.

But what draws most people is the river. The stretch of the Gállego at Murillo is one of the best known in Spain for white water, with rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed descents. In summer there are also places to swim. Close by are the Mallos de Agüero, the village of Riglos at the foot of the rock walls, and Loarre castle, one of the best preserved in Europe.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Murillo de Gállego, as the village can be seen in no time. The star activity is rafting on the Gállego, done with a qualified guide, in a group and with all equipment included, and usually suitable for beginners. Adventure companies in the village also offer canyoning and other outings. For heritage, Loarre castle has its own guided visits and is a short drive away.

How long to spend

The village itself takes an hour, including the climb to the La Liena viewpoint. A rafting descent takes half a day including preparation, so a full day is ideal: white water in the morning and a stroll in Riglos in the afternoon. With two days you can add Loarre castle and a walk around the mallos.

Where to stay

The most practical option is to stay in Murillo, where there are hostels, campsites and rural houses designed for those coming for sport, all near the river. Ayerbe, a few kilometres away, has a bit more accommodation and services. If you prefer a city, Huesca is about forty minutes' drive away and works as a base for combining the river with Loarre and other villages in the area.
