What to see in Salas Bajas

Must-sees

Salas Bajas is a small village in the Somontano de Barbastro, in Huesca, surrounded by vineyards of the Somontano wine appellation. Its Calle Mayor is lined with houses from the 16th to the 18th centuries, some with simple brick doorways and others grand houses with coats of arms. At the end stands the church of San Vicente Mártir, a spacious late Baroque church from the 18th century, and one of the paths out of the village leads to a traditional fountain typical of the area.

From the fountain you continue to the hermitage of the Virgen del Plano, medieval in origin, among fields and vines. The other big draw is wine: the ENATE winery, within the municipality, combines winemaking with modern architecture and contemporary art.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Salas Bajas. The activity on offer is a winery visit, with a tour of the facilities and a tasting, best booked in advance. The village can be explored on your own in a short time. For more visits, in Barbastro, a few minutes away, you can see the cathedral and the centre, and the Somontano Wine Route groups other wineries and villages in the area.

How long to spend

The village and the hermitage take an hour and a half, with a gentle walk among the vines. The winery visit adds another couple of hours. With a full day you can add Barbastro. If you stay two or three days, the Somontano has much more to offer: Alquézar, the Sierra y Cañones de Guara and other wineries on the wine route are a short distance away.

Where to stay

Salas Bajas has rural houses among the vineyards, ideal for a quiet trip centred on wine. Barbastro, very close, is the most practical base, with hotels, restaurants and services for exploring the whole area. If you're more into the mountains, Alquézar has charming places to stay in its old town and is worth it for combining wine tourism with hiking in Guara.
