What to see in Roquetas de Mar

Must-sees

Roquetas de Mar is a coastal town west of Almería, with more than ten kilometres of beaches. By the harbour is the castle of Santa Ana, a seaside fortress that now hosts exhibitions, and close by is the lighthouse, also turned into an art space. The promenade links the centre with the beaches and is pleasant for walking or cycling.

To the south, the Punta Entinas-Sabinar nature area protects dunes, junipers and salt flats with flamingos and other birds. It is one of the most natural stretches of this coast. To the north, Aguadulce has its own marina and a beach with a quieter feel. The farmland around it, with its greenhouses, explains much of the local economy.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are not common in Roquetas de Mar. The usual options are guided routes through Punta Entinas-Sabinar, on foot or by bike, and boat or kayak trips along the coast. You can visit the castle of Santa Ana and the lighthouse on your own. Excursions are the big draw from here. Almería city, with its Alcazaba, is very close and has free tours and guided visits. Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, with its coves and white villages, and the Tabernas desert, setting of many films, are also worthwhile.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the harbour, the castle and the promenade. With a full day you can add a route through Punta Entinas-Sabinar. If you stay a week, split your time between the beach, a day in Almería, one in Cabo de Gata and one in Tabernas. In summer, sightsee early and save the hottest hours for the sea.

Where to stay

The area known as the Urbanización de Roquetas has most of the hotels, many of them beachfront, with pools and family facilities. It is the most practical option for a beach holiday. If you prefer a slower pace, Aguadulce has good restaurants by the marina and is closer to Almería. The centre, by the castle, is handy for getting around by bus.
