What to see in Morales de Toro

Must-sees

Morales de Toro is a flat village in Zamora province, beside the river Bajoz and just west of Toro. Much of the Toro appellation's vineyard lies within its boundaries, with half a dozen active wineries. In the centre, it is worth seeing the three-nave church of San Salvador, with 16th-century altarpieces and a 14th-century carving of the Virgin, and what remains of the medieval church of San Juan Bautista, of which the west wall, a round-arched doorway and the tower survive.

The town hall occupies an 18th-century house and keeps a staircase covered by a richly decorated plasterwork vault. On the banks of the Bajoz is El Caño, a spot for an open-air picnic. But the main visit is wine: the Pagos del Rey Wine Museum occupies the old 1960s cooperative building, keeps the original fermentation tanks and has a garden with large pieces on display outdoors.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours of the village in Morales de Toro. What you will find are guided winery visits, and the best known is the wine museum's, which covers the history of winemaking in the area and ends in the barrel room with a tasting accompanied by tapas. Other wineries in the village also show their facilities, usually by appointment. Toro, very close, has more guided heritage visits.

How long to spend

Half a day is plenty to see the centre and a winery. Ideally combine it with Toro and spend a full day in the area: the collegiate church and historic centre of Toro in the morning, and the Morales wineries in the afternoon. During the harvest, in early autumn, the atmosphere in the fields and wineries is special.

Where to stay

Morales de Toro has very little accommodation, so the practical option is to sleep in Toro, where there are hotels and rural houses in the historic centre and on the outskirts, surrounded by vineyards. From there the wineries are a few minutes away by car. Zamora city, about forty kilometres away on the Duero motorway, is another option if you want more services and nightlife.
