What to see in Cornellà de Llobregat

Must-sees

Cornellà de Llobregat is a city in the Barcelona metropolitan area, in the Baix Llobregat district. Its most pleasant space is the Can Mercader park, with a 19th-century mansion, gardens and walking areas. Close to the centre is Cornellà castle, a building of medieval origin altered over the centuries and now used for cultural activities.

Another interesting visit is the Water Museum, housed in an early 20th-century pumping station, which explains how the Barcelona area is supplied with water. Football fans know the city for the RCD Espanyol stadium. But Cornellà’s great asset is its closeness to Barcelona, with metro, tram and commuter trains.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Cornellà. Most people stay here and travel into Barcelona, where pay-what-you-like free walking tours cover the Gothic Quarter, El Born and La Rambla. There are also routes through the Eixample focusing on Modernisme and the buildings of Gaudí and other architects of the period.

Among paid visits, the most popular are guided entry to the Sagrada Família and Park Güell. Outside the city, day trips to Montserrat, with its monastery and mountains, are very popular. If you like nature, the Llobregat delta, near Cornellà, has natural areas for birdwatching.

How long to spend

Cornellà can be seen in half a day: the Can Mercader park, the castle and the Water Museum. For Barcelona you need at least three days: one for Ciutat Vella, another for the Eixample and the Sagrada Família and another for Montjuïc or Park Güell. If you have more time, add a day for Montserrat or the coast.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay near a line 5 metro stop or the commuter rail station, so you can reach Barcelona without awkward changes. The central area, near Can Mercader and the castle, has shops and restaurants. If you are coming for a match or an event at the stadium, hotels near that area save you journeys.
