What to see in El Toboso

Must-sees

El Toboso is Dulcinea's village, and much of a visit revolves around Don Quixote. The Casa-Museo de Dulcinea recreates a well-to-do La Mancha farmhouse from Cervantes' time, with its courtyard, wine cellar and farm tools. Close by is the square with the sculpture of Don Quixote kneeling before Dulcinea, a must-stop for almost everyone.

The church of San Antonio Abad, very large for a village like this, rises above the low houses and can be seen from afar. The Museo Cervantino holds editions of Don Quixote in many languages, some signed by well-known figures. The walk is rounded off by the Trinitarian convent and streets of white houses with stone doorways.

Free tours and guided visits

There are usually no free walking tours in El Toboso. The norm is guided walks of the historic centre linking Dulcinea's House, the church and the Museo Cervantino, recounting the passages of Don Quixote set in the village. Many are booked through the tourist office and run in Spanish.

The most useful paid visits are guided entry to the Casa-Museo de Dulcinea and Don Quixote route excursions, which usually combine El Toboso with the windmills of Campo de Criptana or Consuegra. If you're driving, you can put together your own route around the area and book a guide only at the key sights.

How long to spend

Three to four hours are enough to see El Toboso at a relaxed pace. Start with the Casa-Museo de Dulcinea, continue to the square and the church of San Antonio Abad and finish at the Museo Cervantino. If you have lunch in the village, you can spend the afternoon in Campo de Criptana, about thirty minutes' drive away, and catch the sunset at the windmills.

Where to stay

El Toboso has limited accommodation, mainly rural houses and a small hotel or two in the historic centre, within walking distance of all the sights. It's a good option if you want silence and a quiet night. For more choice, Campo de Criptana and Alcázar de San Juan are close by and let you explore several towns on the Don Quixote route.
