What to see in Finestrat

Must-sees

Finestrat is in the Marina Baixa, right next to Benidorm but with a very different character. Its old town sits on a hill where a Moorish castle once stood, and its colourful houses lean over the edge of the rock as if hanging in mid-air. At the top, by the hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo del Remedio, a viewpoint looks out over the area and the Mediterranean. Down the narrow streets you reach the church of Sant Bertomeu and corners decorated with tiles.

Behind the village rises the Puig Campana, over 1,400 metres high and one of the most recognisable mountains in the province. The Volta al Puig Campana route circles it, and the climb to the summit is demanding. At the foot of the old town is the Font del Molí, a spot with water and shade. The municipality reaches the sea at the Cala de Finestrat, a small beach between buildings, good for ending the day with a rice dish.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Finestrat. The most practical thing is to stop at the tourist office, which has information points in the village and at the Cala, to find your way around the old town and the mountain routes. For the Puig Campana there are guided hikes, recommended if you do not know the terrain. Day trips from Benidorm and Alicante around the inland villages of the Marina Baixa also stop in Finestrat.

How long to spend

The old town takes two or three hours, with time to climb to the viewpoint and go down to the Font del Molí. If you want to hike, set aside a whole day for the Volta al Puig Campana or the summit climb, and start early to avoid the heat. With two days you can combine mountain and beach, or visit nearby villages such as Polop, La Nucía or Guadalest.

Where to stay

If you want peace and a village atmosphere, stay in or around the old town, where there are rural houses and apartments with views of the Puig Campana. If you prefer the beach, the Cala de Finestrat has hotels and apartments by the sea. Between the two there are developments with holiday homes, convenient if you have a car. Benidorm, next door, has far more choice and works as a base if you cannot find a room.
