What to see in L'Ametlla de Mar

Must-sees

L'Ametlla de Mar is a fishing village in the south of the Costa Daurada, close to the Ebro Delta. Its harbour is still active, and in the afternoon you can watch the boats come in and the fish auction. The centre is small, with low houses, the church of Santa Maria and streets running down to the sea. The food revolves around fish and rice.

The coast is the main attraction. There are many small coves of rock, pine trees and clear water, linked by the Camí de Ronda, part of the GR-92 trail. To the north is the Calafat estate and, to the south, the castle of Sant Jordi d'Alfama, an old fortress by the sea. The Ebro Delta is less than half an hour away by car.

Free tours and guided visits

There are usually no free walking tours here. Guided activities and excursions are the norm. The best known is the boat trip to the bluefin tuna farms, where fishing and farming are explained and you can sometimes swim near the tuna. There are also guided walks along the Camí de Ronda, kayak trips between coves and excursions to the Ebro Delta to see rice fields, lagoons and birds.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for the village and a cove. If you want to walk the Camí de Ronda, take the tuna farm trip and spend time on the beach, allow two days. With three or four you can use L'Ametlla as a base for the Ebro Delta and inland towns such as Tortosa. In summer, book boat trips in advance.

Where to stay

The best area to stay is the centre, near the harbour. You have restaurants, the fish market and several coves a few minutes' walk away. If you prefer peace and quiet and flats with a pool, look in Calafat or the estates along the Camí de Ronda, although there a car is almost essential. There are also campsites near the sea. The train station connects you with Tarragona and Tortosa.
