What to see in Olmedo

Must-sees

Olmedo is a town in the south of Valladolid province, known for Lope de Vega's play El caballero de Olmedo, which has given the town much of its identity. It keeps stretches of its walls and several gates, such as the Arco de San Miguel, and a group of brick Mudéjar churches. San Miguel holds the crypt of the Virgen de la Soterraña, and San Andrés and Santa María del Castillo complete the route.

The Palacio del Caballero de Olmedo is an interpretation centre that brings Lope's work and Golden Age theatre to life in an entertaining way. Close by, the Mudéjar Theme Park brings together open-air scale models of Mudéjar monuments from across Castile and León. Another draw is the thermal spa, set in a former convent beside the historic centre.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Olmedo. On Civitatis, the offers revolve around the thermal spa: pool access, water circuit and massages. The tourist office has information on visiting the Palacio del Caballero and the Mudéjar Theme Park, which you can explore on your own. From Valladolid or Medina del Campo it's easy to come by car or train.

How long to spend

Allow a full day for the walls, the churches, the Palacio del Caballero and the Mudéjar Theme Park. If you want to enjoy the spa without rushing, it's best to stay a night and set aside an afternoon for it. With two days you can also visit nearby Medina del Campo, with the Castillo de la Mota and its main square.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay in the historic centre, inside or next to the walls, from where you can walk to the churches, the Palacio del Caballero and the spa. The spa itself has accommodation, designed for those coming to rest. The town's accommodation is limited, so Medina del Campo and Valladolid are good alternatives if you can't find a room.
