What to see in Macael

Must-sees

Macael, in the Almanzora valley, is Spain's marble capital. Its white marble has been quarried since Roman times and ended up in works as famous as the Alhambra. The landscape is shaped by the quarries of the Sierra de los Filabres, huge white steps visible from the Mirador de las Canteras, beside the access road. It is one of the most striking industrial views in Andalusia.

In the town, marble appears on every corner. The Plaza de la Constitución has a replica of the Alhambra's Fountain of the Lions carved in local marble, and the boulevard on the Avenida de Ronda is dotted with sculptures. You will also see a giant marble mortar, the 17th-century church of Santa María del Rosario and many workshops where the stone is worked.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Macael. The activity you can book is a visit to the Marble Interpretation Centre, which explains the geology, the history of quarrying and the stonemasons' tools. The centre also arranges guided visits to quarries and workshops, the best way to understand how the stone is cut and transported. Ask in advance, as groups are usually small.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for the town, the interpretation centre and the viewpoint. If you add a quarry visit, allow a long half day. With a full day you can also visit Olula del Río, right next to Macael, with its contemporary art museum, or drive up to a village in the Sierra de los Filabres.

Where to stay

Macael has simple accommodation, aimed mainly at people coming for work, in the centre and around the Avenida de Ronda. Olula del Río, a step away, and Fines widen the choice a little. For more variety or a coastal plan, Mojácar and the Levante coast of Almería are a little under an hour away by car.
