What to see in Mogán

Must-sees

Mogán is a municipality in south-west Gran Canaria with two sides: the inland village, in a valley between mountains, and the coast. The most visited spot is Puerto de Mogán, with canals running through a quarter of white houses, colourful doors and windows and bougainvillea on the walls. It has a marina and fishing port, a sandy beach protected by a breakwater and a promenade full of fish restaurants.

Up the ravine road you reach Mogán village, quieter, with its church and a restored windmill. The municipality’s coast has other well-known beaches, such as Amadores, with pale sand and calm water, and Puerto Rico, with a large marina. Taurito and Playa del Cura are smaller. Further north, Veneguera beach is wild and reached by a dirt track.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are not common in Mogán. Guided visits and trips from the port are the norm. The most popular are boat trips along the south coast, with outings to see dolphins and other cetaceans, and tourist submarine trips around the seabed near the port. Jeep trips into the interior of the island also leave from here, with stops at Roque Nublo and the mountain villages.

How long to spend

You can see Puerto de Mogán in about three hours, including a stroll along the canals, the beach and lunch in the port. With a full day you can add the inland village and Amadores beach. If you use it as a base, three or four days let you alternate the beach, a boat trip and an excursion to the mountains or Las Palmas.

Where to stay

Puerto de Mogán is the best option if you want to walk along the canals at night and have restaurants at hand. There are fewer places to stay and it is worth booking early. Playa del Cura, Amadores and Puerto Rico have more hotels and apartments, with pools and sea views, and are linked to the port by bus and, in season, by boat. To explore the island, hiring a car is the most practical option.
