What to see in San Vicente de la Barquera

Must-sees

San Vicente de la Barquera is a seafaring town in western Cantabria, between two estuaries and with the Picos de Europa in the background. The Puebla Vieja, up top, keeps remains of the wall, the Castillo del Rey and the Gothic church of Santa María de los Ángeles, with the Renaissance tomb of the inquisitor Antonio del Corro. From up there you get good views of the port and the marshes.

Below, the Maza bridge crosses the estuary on its many stone arches. The fishing port brings the town to life and supplies its fish and seafood. Very close is Merón beach, long and open, and the Oyambre Natural Park, with dunes, marshes and cliffs.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in San Vicente. The old town is small and easy to explore on your own, although in summer there are usually guided visits to the castle and the church. The town is also on the Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago. The most interesting excursions head inland. There are guided trips to the Picos de Europa, riding the Fuente Dé cable car with a stop in Potes, and visits to El Soplao cave. Surf sessions at Merón and trips to Comillas are also popular.

How long to spend

The town can be seen in half a day: climb to the Puebla Vieja, go into the church and the castle, head down to the port and cross the Maza bridge. With two or three days you can add Oyambre and Merón, Comillas and a full day in the Picos de Europa. If you have more time, it is a good base for western Cantabria and eastern Asturias.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay in the centre, near the port and the bridge, with restaurants and walking access to the Puebla Vieja. If you prefer the beach, the Merón area has hotels and campsites a few minutes’ drive away. Around town there are rural cottages with views of the Picos de Europa, good for anyone seeking calm with a car.
