What to see in Burgos

Must-sees

Burgos Cathedral is a World Heritage Site and one of the great works of Gothic architecture in Spain. Outside, its openwork spires stand out. Inside are the Constable’s Chapel, the Golden Staircase and the tomb of El Cid and Doña Jimena beneath the crossing. Look out too for the Papamoscas, the automaton that opens its mouth as it strikes the hours.

The walk continues through the Arco de Santa María, the Plaza Mayor and the Paseo del Espolón, along the Arlanzón river. Climb to the Castle viewpoint to see the cathedral from above. On the outskirts are the monastery of Las Huelgas, founded by Alfonso VIII, and the Miraflores charterhouse, with Gil de Siloé’s tombs. The Museum of Human Evolution explains the finds at Atapuerca.

Free tours and guided visits

The classic free tour covers the old town: the area around the cathedral, the Arco de Santa María, the Casa del Cordón, where the Catholic Monarchs received Columbus after his second voyage, and the statue of El Cid. It tells the history of Castile and of the Camino de Santiago, which crosses the city. A guided visit to the cathedral is worth it. Outside the city, the star trip is the Atapuerca archaeological sites. You can also go to Santo Domingo de Silos or Covarrubias.

How long to spend

Burgos can be seen in one or two days. One is enough for the cathedral, the centre and the Castle viewpoint. With two, add Las Huelgas, the Miraflores charterhouse and the Museum of Human Evolution. If you’re interested in prehistory, keep another morning for the Atapuerca sites, about fifteen kilometres from the city.

Where to stay

The old town, between the cathedral, the Plaza Mayor and the Espolón, is the most convenient area. Everything is within walking distance and the tapas bars of Calle San Lorenzo are close by. Across the river, the area around the Museum of Human Evolution is a little quieter and still a short walk away. If you arrive by car, look for somewhere with parking, as parking in the old town is difficult.
