What to see in Calasparra

Must-sees

Calasparra lies in the north-west of the Region of Murcia, beside the river Segura, and its name is tied to the designation-of-origin rice grown on its river plains. The town is laid out around a hill with the remains of the old castle, overlooking the paddy fields. In the centre it is worth strolling the streets near the main square and stepping into the parish church of San Pedro.

The best-known visit is a few kilometres away, on the banks of the Segura: the Santuario de la Virgen de la Esperanza, built partly inside a cave in the rock. Nearby is the Cueva del Puerto, a large cave you can explore inside with a guide. Downstream begins the Almadenes canyon, which separates Calasparra from Cieza. In September, the patron saint festivities include bull runs and a deep-rooted bullfighting fair.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Calasparra. The most booked activity is rafting through the Almadenes canyon, a raft trip down the river between rock walls, suitable for beginners with a guide. The Cueva del Puerto can only be visited with a guide, and at the tourist office you can ask about other guided visits around the town and the rice-growing area.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the town and the sanctuary. If you add the Cueva del Puerto or rafting, allow a full day. With two days you can combine the river with a visit to Cieza or Caravaca de la Cruz. And do not leave without trying a local rice dish, which is almost a must.

Where to stay

In Calasparra itself, the practical choice is to stay in the centre, near the square, from where you can walk everywhere. If you want to be by the river, the sanctuary and paddy field area has rural houses and adventure tourism lodgings. Choice is limited, so if you cannot find a room, Caravaca de la Cruz and Cieza are close by.
