What to see in Cenes de la Vega

Must-sees

Cenes de la Vega is a village right next to Granada, in the valley of the river Genil and at the start of the road up to Sierra Nevada. It is a small, quiet municipality that many Granada families chose for years as a summer retreat. Its centre revolves around Calle Real, home to the church of the Virgen del Rosario, built over an old hermitage of San Bartolomé, the patron saint, and documented as early as the 16th century.

The most curious things about the village have to do with water and paths. Historic irrigation channels that have watered the plain for centuries pass through the municipality, and the old Sierra Nevada tram, which linked Granada with the mountains, used to run through here. Above the village rises the Cerro del Oro, and the paths along the Genil let you walk towards Pinos Genil or back to Granada.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Cenes de la Vega, and the usual plan is to combine it with what Granada offers, where there are free walking tours and guided visits of the Albaicín, the centre and the Alhambra. Tourist information for the village is handled at the town hall. If you love nature, trips to Sierra Nevada leave from Granada along the mountain road, right next to the village.

How long to spend

The village can be seen in an hour or two: a stroll through the centre, the church and some time by the river. If you like walking, give half a day to the Genil path towards Pinos Genil. The usual plan is to use Cenes as a stop or a base and divide the rest of your time between Granada and Sierra Nevada. In winter, the proximity to the ski slopes is its main advantage.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Cenes is small, with a hotel and some apartments in the village and in the hillside developments. Staying here makes sense if you are heading up to Sierra Nevada or want lower prices and peace a few minutes from Granada, with a bus into the city. If you prefer to walk between monuments, the best option is to sleep in Granada, in the centre, the Realejo or the Albaicín.
