What to see in Buñol

Must-sees

Buñol is in inland Valencia, in the Hoya de Buñol area, about forty kilometres from the city. Everyone knows it for La Tomatina, held on the last Wednesday of August, but the town has much more. In the centre stands its castle, one of the best preserved in the Valencia region, which houses an archaeological collection with remains from prehistory to Roman times.

In the old Molino de Galán, a restored paper-mill building, is the Tomatina Museum, and the old church of El Salvador holds the ethnological collection. The natural setting is the other big draw. The Cueva Turche, with its waterfall and small lake, is the most visited spot, and riverside hiking trails such as the water route start from the town.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Buñol. To see the castle and the museums, it's best to ask the tourist office about scheduled visits. Most visitors from outside come in August with Tomatina packages from Valencia, which usually include transport and entry to the festival.

How long to spend

The castle, the museums and the centre can be seen in a morning. If you want to go down to the Cueva Turche or do a hike, allow the full day. For La Tomatina, the festival day itself is enough, but plan well ahead, as access is regulated and the town fills up.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Buñol is scarce, limited to a few rural houses and apartments in and around the town. That's why many people stay in Valencia, well connected by commuter train and motorway. In the area, Chiva and other towns of the Hoya de Buñol are a quieter alternative, especially outside Tomatina week.
