What to see in Puerto Real

Must-sees

Puerto Real was founded by the Catholic Monarchs in 1483 and keeps a centre of straight streets, an orderly layout unusual in the area. Walk to the church of San Sebastián, the main church, and through Plaza de Jesús and the nearby streets, with courtyard houses and whitewashed façades. The market hall is a good place to see the bay’s fish and seafood.

Nature is the other attraction. The municipality is part of the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park, with marshes, salt pans and saltwater channels. The Pinar de Las Canteras, among pines and old shell-stone quarries, is a green space much used for walks. From the seafront promenade you have views of the bay and Cádiz.

Free tours and guided visits

Puerto Real has no regular free tours. The usual options are guided visits of the historic centre on special dates and routes through the natural park, on foot, by bike or by kayak, explaining the salt pans, the birds and traditional fishing. Its big advantage is its location. By local train you reach Cádiz quickly, where there are daily free tours of the old town, plus guided visits to the cathedral and the Oratory of San Felipe Neri. Jerez and El Puerto de Santa María, with their bodegas, are also very close.

How long to spend

About three hours are enough for central Puerto Real, with the church, the squares and the market. If you add a walk in the pine wood or a route through the marshes, it fills a day. Many travellers use it as a base for the bay, and then three or four days let you see Cádiz, Jerez and El Puerto at leisure.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in the centre, near the train station, to get easily to Cádiz and Jerez without a car. You also have bars, the market and services there. If you will spend more time on the beach or want more hotel choice, you might prefer to sleep in Cádiz or El Puerto de Santa María and come to Puerto Real on a short trip.
