What to see in Gordoncillo

Must-sees

Gordoncillo is in the south-east of León province, on the banks of the river Cea and close to the border with Valladolid. It is a wine village, within the León appellation, with vineyards of Prieto Picudo and Albarín grapes. The Plaza Mayor keeps its arcades and the early 20th-century brick town hall, and around it are 17th and 18th-century mansions with wrought-iron balconies.

The church of San Juan Degollado has a Herrerian doorway, a Mudéjar-style tower and a Gothic chapel known as the Martyrs' chapel. Around the streets you will see sculptures about life in the vineyards, and on the outskirts there are traditional wine cellars dug into the ground, very typical of this area.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Gordoncillo. The activity you will find is a visit to a village winery, with a tour of the production and ageing areas and a final tasting of its wines. It is the best way to discover Prieto Picudo, the area's own grape. You can see the rest on your own on a stroll through the village and along the Cea.

How long to spend

The village can be explored in a couple of hours. If you add the winery visit, allow a long half day. With a full day you can visit Valencia de Don Juan, with its castle, or Valderas, both very close. With two days you have time to continue to León city, less than an hour away by car.

Where to stay

Gordoncillo has very little accommodation, just a rural house, ideal if you want peace. Valencia de Don Juan, a few kilometres away, has more hotels and restaurants and is the most practical base for touring the southern León wine area. If you prefer a city, León has the widest choice and is less than an hour away by car.
