What to see in Peratallada

Must-sees

Peratallada is a medieval village in the Baix Empordà, part of the municipality of Forallac. It grew around a castle built on the rock, and its name recalls precisely that carved stone. The enclosure keeps much of its walls and towers, and in some stretches you can see the moat, cut into the rock itself. Of the castle, the keep stands out; the palace is private and cannot be visited inside.

The best thing is to get lost unhurriedly in its cobbled streets, car-free in the historic centre. The Plaça de les Voltes, with its arches, is the heart of the village and has terraces for lunch. Look out too for the Portal de la Verge, with the Torre de les Hores, and the late 12th-century Romanesque church of Sant Esteve. Nearby are Pals, Ullastret and La Bisbal d'Empordà, known for its ceramics.

Free tours and guided visits

In Peratallada you can find a free walking tour of the village, a pay-what-you-like walk covering the walls, the squares and the history of the castle. It is a good way to understand how the enclosure was organised. Day trips from Girona and Barcelona also combine Peratallada with Pals and other medieval villages of the Empordà. If you prefer to go on your own, the village is small and easy to explore.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough to explore Peratallada at leisure, lunch aside. To make the most of the day, combine it with Pals or the Iberian site of Ullastret, very close. With two days you can add La Bisbal d'Empordà and a Costa Brava cove. In summer and at weekends the village fills up, so arrive early or late in the afternoon.

Where to stay

Sleeping in the village itself is a good option, as there are small hotels and rural houses in stone buildings, and at night the atmosphere is very peaceful. The surroundings are full of farmhouses converted into rural stays. For more choice, La Bisbal d'Empordà is very close, and Pals or Begur bring you closer to the coast.
