What to see in Benalmádena

Must-sees

Benalmádena has three very different parts. Benalmádena Pueblo, on the hillside, keeps its white streets, quiet squares and viewpoints over the coast. Arroyo de la Miel is the busiest and most commercial part, with Parque de la Paloma, a large green space with lakes and free-roaming animals. Benalmádena Costa has the beaches, the promenade and Puerto Marina, a marina with eye-catching buildings, restaurants and life until late.

Between the village and the coast stands the Enlightenment Stupa, a large Buddhist temple with wide views of the sea. Very close by is Colomares Castle, a monument to Christopher Columbus whose architecture mixes styles. The cable car climbs from Arroyo de la Miel to Mount Calamorro, from where you can see much of the Costa del Sol. With children, Sea Life and Selwo Marina, next to the marina and Parque de la Paloma, are popular choices.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are less common in Benalmádena than in Málaga. When there are any, they usually cover Benalmádena Pueblo and you pay what you like at the end. Guided visits and day trips are more usual here. Trips to Málaga, Ronda, Nerja with its caves and the Caminito del Rey, which must be booked in advance, are worth it. Boat trips along the coast also leave from the marina, sometimes with dolphin watching.

How long to spend

Two days are enough to see the essentials. On the first, spend the morning in Benalmádena Pueblo, the Stupa and Colomares, and the afternoon on the cable car and in Parque de la Paloma. On the second, the beach and Puerto Marina. If you stay four or five days, keep at least two for trips to Málaga, Ronda or the Caminito del Rey.

Where to stay

Benalmádena Costa, near Puerto Marina, is the best area if you want the beach, restaurants and nightlife. Arroyo de la Miel is more practical for getting around, because it has a commuter station with direct trains to Málaga and the airport, and prices are a little lower. Benalmádena Pueblo is for people who prefer calm and views, although you will need a car or the bus to get down to the coast.
