What to see in Mollina

Must-sees

Mollina is a village in the Antequera area, in the north of Málaga province, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Its best-known visit is the Nativity Scene Museum, with more than a hundred large nativity scenes made in different techniques and styles. In the centre, the late 17th-century church of Nuestra Señora de la Oliva, with three naves, and the Plaza de la Constitución, where village life gathers, stand out.

On the outskirts is the 18th-century Convento de la Ascensión, known as the Cortijo de la Villa, with a Baroque doorway and a sundial. The municipality also holds Roman remains, such as the Capuchina mausoleum in the Sierra de la Camorra and the Castellum de Santillán site. Wine is part of local identity: there are wineries in the village and the harvest is celebrated each year with its own fair.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Mollina. The activity you can book is entry to the Nativity Scene Museum, which you visit at your own pace. For the rest, the practical approach is to ask the town council about winery visits or routes in the hills. If you want more complete guided tours, Antequera, a few kilometres away, has tours of its historic centre and the Dolmens site.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the Nativity Scene Museum, the church of La Oliva and a stroll around the centre. If you want to visit a winery or head to the Sierra de la Camorra, allow a full day. Mollina fits well into a two or three-day break in the area, combined with Antequera, El Torcal and the Fuente de Piedra lagoon, all a short distance away.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Mollina is limited: a few rural houses in the village and places on estates among the vineyards, good if you want peace and are driving. The most convenient alternative is Antequera, about fifteen minutes away, with hotels in the historic centre and around it. From there you can easily do Mollina as a half-day trip.
