What to see in Xàtiva

Must-sees

Xàtiva is dominated by its castle, which stretches along the crest of the sierra in two enclosures, the Castell Menor and the Castell Major. The climb takes some effort, but the views over the city and the market gardens make up for it. On the way you pass the Sant Feliu chapel, one of the city's oldest churches.

Below, the old town brings together the collegiate church of Santa María, known as the Seu, the Hospital Real with its Renaissance doorway and the Font dels 25 Canals. Xàtiva was the birthplace of the Borgia popes Callixtus III and Alexander VI. The Museu de l'Almodí keeps the portrait of Philip V hung upside down, because he ordered the city burnt.

Free tours and guided visits

Xàtiva has pay-what-you-like free walking tours of the historic centre. They usually explain the history of the Borgias, the War of the Spanish Succession and the architecture of the Seu and the Hospital Real. The most worthwhile paid visit is the castle, which can be done with a guide to understand its different phases. It is also common to arrive in Xàtiva on an organised day trip from Valencia.

How long to spend

One well-used day is enough. Climb to the castle early, before the heat, and come down to the centre for lunch. In the afternoon spend a few hours on the Seu, the Museu de l'Almodí and a stroll through the streets of noble houses. If you want more calm or are interested in the nearby villages, stay a night.

Where to stay

The old town, between the Seu and the Albereda, is the best option for seeing the city on foot and being close to the path up to the castle. The Albereda de Jaume I is the main promenade, with bars and terraces. The railway station area is practical if you arrive from Valencia without a car.
