What to see in Osa de la Vega

Must-sees

Osa de la Vega is a small village in Cuenca province, in La Mancha, set in a fertile plain surrounded by gentle hills and almond groves, a few kilometres north of Belmonte. Its main monument is the late Gothic church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, surprisingly large for the size of the village. Inside it has three naves with rib vaults and a 16th-century main altarpiece.

The most unusual thing about Osa de la Vega is underground. Its municipality has ancient Roman mines of lapis specularis, a transparent gypsum used as window glass in Roman times and extracted in this part of Cuenca. You can see shafts, galleries and remains of mining settlements. In the village, the Plaza Mayor also deserves a stroll.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular tourist activities in Osa de la Vega. To visit the Roman mines, the usual approach is to arrange it with the town hall, which will tell you how to get there. The church can be seen during service times. If you want to add guided visits, the area has more on offer: Belmonte castle, very close, and the Segóbriga archaeological park, linked to the history of these mines.

How long to spend

The village and the church can be seen in an hour or two. If you add the Roman mines, allow half a day. Ideally combine it on the same day with Belmonte, a few kilometres away, and Villaescusa de Haro, another neighbouring village. With two days you can add Segóbriga and better understand the importance of lapis specularis in the area.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Osa de la Vega itself is minimal, practically a rural house in the village, perfect if you want silence and starry skies. The most practical option is to sleep in Belmonte, which is very close and has more places to stay in its historic centre, at the foot of the castle. Another option is San Clemente or, if you prefer a city, Cuenca, a little over an hour away by car.
