What to see in San Cristovo de Cea

Must-sees

San Cristovo de Cea is a municipality in the north of the province of Ourense, known for its bread, which has Protected Geographical Indication. The town still bakes in traditional domed granite ovens, and the elongated loaf with a central cut dividing it into two halves is easy to recognise. Walking through the streets you come across several craft bakeries, and on the Plaza Mayor stands the early 20th-century clock tower, the town's symbol.

A few kilometres away, in a mountain valley, is the monastery of Santa María de Oseira, founded in the 12th century and now home to Trappist Cistercian monks. Its size has earned it the nickname of the Galician Escorial, and inside the highlights are the medieval church, the Baroque façade, the cloisters and the grand staircase. Cea is also the end of a stage of the Camino Sanabrés, coming from Ourense, so you will see pilgrims all year round.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Cea. The main visit is the Oseira monastery, which is open to the public; check before you go. In town you can drop into a bakery to see the ovens and buy freshly baked bread. If you are staying in Ourense, some trips around the province combine monasteries and inland Galician scenery, and walking a stretch of the Camino Sanabrés is another good way to get to know the area.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the town, the clock tower and a stop at a bakery. Add two or three hours for the Oseira monastery and its surroundings, so a full day lets you see everything calmly. If you are walking the Camino, Cea is a good place to rest, eat well and carry on to the next stage north.

Where to stay

The town of Cea has rural houses and the odd small place to stay, plus the pilgrim hostel, all near the centre and the Camino. Choice is limited, especially in summer, so book ahead. If you cannot find a room, Ourense, the nearest city, has many more hotels and lets you combine the visit with its hot springs and historic centre.
