What to see in Baños de Rioja

Must-sees

Baños de Rioja is a very small village in La Rioja Alta, on the left bank of the river Oja and a few kilometres from Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Its silhouette is defined by the Torre Fuerte, what remains of a medieval fortress. Only the keep survives, about nineteen metres high with very thick walls, enough to understand the defensive role this valley crossing once had.

Very close is the parish church of La Magdalena, in dressed stone, which keeps elements of a Romanesque church and was enlarged in later centuries. Across the river, a couple of kilometres away, is the hermitage of El Pilar, simple and surrounded by fields. The rest is a landscape of vineyards and cereal, ideal for an unhurried walk combined with visits to Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Haro.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Baños de Rioja, which makes sense for a village of this size. What you will find is a vineyard visit with tasting, a good way to learn how vines are worked in La Rioja Alta and to try local wines. For guided heritage visits, the most practical option is to head to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, with its cathedral and old town, or Haro, where the century-old wineries are the main draw.

How long to spend

The village itself can be seen in an hour: the tower, the church and a walk to the banks of the Oja. If you add the vineyard visit, allow half a day. Ideally spend a full day in the area, with the morning in Baños de Rioja and the afternoon in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. With two days you can add Haro and another winery nearby.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Baños de Rioja itself is minimal, at most a rural house, so most visitors sleep elsewhere. Santo Domingo de la Calzada is the most convenient option: it has hotels in the old town and pilgrim accommodation on the Camino de Santiago, and is a few minutes away by car. Haro is a good alternative if your trip revolves around wine, and Ezcaray if you prefer a mountain setting.
