What to see in Garachico

Must-sees

Garachico, on the north coast of Tenerife, was the island’s main port until 1706. That year the eruption of the Trevejo volcano buried much of the town and the harbour under lava. Today its historic centre keeps Canarian houses, wooden balconies and quiet squares. Plaza de la Libertad, with the former convent of San Francisco, is the centre of local life.

Close by are the church of Santa Ana and the Castle of San Miguel, a small fortress by the sea. The Puerta de Tierra park holds the old harbour gate. The lava formed the natural pools of El Caletón, where you can swim when the sea is calm. Offshore rises the Roque de Garachico.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are rare in Garachico. The usual options are guided visits of the historic centre, focusing on the eruption and the port’s trading past. Many excursions around the north of Tenerife start from here: to Masca and the Teno massif, to Icod de los Vinos to see the thousand-year-old dragon tree, and to Teide National Park. There are also guided hikes in the nearby hills.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the historic centre, the castle and a swim at El Caletón. If you want to combine it with Icod de los Vinos and Teno, allow a full day. With two or three days you can use Garachico as a base for the north of the island: one day for Teno and Masca and another to go up Teide.

Where to stay

The nicest place to stay is the historic centre. There are small hotels in old houses and apartments near the coast, and at night the village is very peaceful. From the centre you can walk to El Caletón and the restaurants. If you are driving, Icod de los Vinos and Los Silos are nearby alternatives. To explore the north of Tenerife, a car is almost essential.
