What to see in Matapozuelos

Must-sees

Matapozuelos is a farming village in the south of Valladolid province, in the Tierra del Vino area, on a plain watered by the rivers Adaja and Eresma. Its main monument is the church of Santa María Magdalena, a listed Site of Cultural Interest. Building began in the mid-16th century, and its tower, finished in the early 18th century by Morisco master builders, can be seen from far across the plain.

On the outskirts is the 17th-century shrine of the Santo Cristo del Perdón, which once served as the cemetery chapel. Another building with history is the old farmhouse of the college of San Gregorio, known locally as El Colegio. The Madrid branch of the Camino de Santiago passes through the municipality, crossing the Adaja on a stone bridge, and a waymarked route lets you explore the riverbank on foot.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular guided visits in Matapozuelos. The most practical option is to explore the village on your own and walk the PRC-VA 33 Camino de Nivaria, a waymarked circuit of about ten kilometres and low difficulty that starts at the town hall square, crosses the Adaja and follows a stretch of the Camino de Madrid. For guided visits, Valladolid and Medina del Campo have much more on offer.

How long to spend

The village and the church can be seen in an hour or two. If you walk the Camino de Nivaria, add about two and a half hours, so a full morning is enough. Ideally combine the visit with Medina del Campo and its castle of La Mota, very close, or with Olmedo, to fill a day in the south of Valladolid province.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Matapozuelos is very scarce, barely a rural house or a rental home, so look early. Medina del Campo, a short drive away, is the most convenient base, with hotels in the historic centre and near the Plaza Mayor. Valladolid is the other alternative, especially if you want to combine villages with a visit to the city.
