What to see in Alcanar

Must-sees

Alcanar is a municipality in the Montsià, at the southern tip of Catalonia, between the Montsià range and the sea. In the main town you can stroll through the old quarter, with its narrow streets, and see the Baroque church of Sant Miquel. Among its buildings, the Modernista Casa O'Connor stands out. Around the town stretch citrus groves and olive trees, some very old.

A few kilometres away, at the foot of the hills, is the Moleta del Remei, an Iberian settlement with remains of walls, streets and house foundations, and views over the plain and the Ebro Delta. Next to it is the hermitage of El Remei. On the coast, Les Cases d'Alcanar is a fishing village with an active port, a seafront promenade and a church built where a watchtower once stood. People come here above all to eat fish and seafood.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Alcanar. The tourist office has information on visiting the Moleta del Remei and on routes in the Montsià hills and along the coast. Trips to the Ebro Delta, with boat rides and birdwatching, also leave from the area.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the old town and the Moleta del Remei. In the afternoon you can head down to Les Cases d'Alcanar to stroll around the port and have dinner. With an extra day you have time for a route in the Montsià hills or a trip to the Ebro Delta, a short drive away.

Where to stay

If you come for the beach, the most convenient option is Les Cases d'Alcanar or the Alcanar Platja area, with apartments and places to stay near the sea. The main town of Alcanar is quieter and practical for heading into the hills. For more choice, Sant Carles de la Ràpita and Vinaròs are very close, one on each side of the municipality.
