What to see in Formentera

Must-sees

Formentera is the smallest of the Pine Islands and is reached by boat from Ibiza to the port of La Savina. In the north, the beaches of Ses Illetes and Llevant are part of Ses Salines Nature Park. They have white sand and very clear water, thanks to the Posidonia seagrass meadows protected by UNESCO. Very close by are the ponds of the old salt pans.

In the centre of the island, Sant Francesc Xavier has a church that was also a fortress. To the south stretches the long Migjorn beach. It is worth going to the two lighthouses: Cap de Barbaria, in an almost desert landscape, and La Mola, on a cliff to the east. Es Caló, a small fishing port, has its boat huts.

Free tours and guided visits

There are hardly any free walking tours in Formentera. Guided trips and activities are the norm. The most common are kayak or boat trips along the coast, with stops to snorkel over the seagrass. That way you see coves that are hard to reach by land. The island is also easy to explore by bike on its green routes, signposted and flat almost all the way. There are guided bike tours past the salt pans, the lighthouses and the villages. If you are coming from Ibiza, there are day trips that include the boat.

How long to spend

In a day from Ibiza you can see Ses Illetes and a lighthouse, but you will be rushed. Three or four days are ideal. One for the north and its beaches, another for Migjorn and Cap de Barbaria, and another for La Mola and Es Caló. Leave time to do nothing.

Where to stay

Es Pujols has the most hotels, restaurants and nightlife, and is close to the northern beaches. Sant Francesc Xavier is quieter, in the centre of the island and well connected. La Savina is practical if you arrive and leave by boat. If you want silence and a beach, the Migjorn coast has more secluded places to stay. Hiring a scooter, car or bike will give you freedom.
