What to see in Burriana

Must-sees

Burriana lies in the Plana Baixa of Castellón, between orange groves and the sea. Its history is tied to the orange, and that shows in the centre. The old town revolves around the church of El Salvador, a temple of Gothic origin with a bell tower visible from afar. In the nearby streets you will find early 20th-century modernista houses, built by the families who grew rich on the citrus trade.

One of them houses the Museu de la Taronja, devoted to growing and exporting oranges, the best way to understand how the town grew. By the sea is El Grao, with its fishing and leisure port, and the El Arenal and La Serratella beaches. For a quiet walk, the Clot de la Mare de Déu has a lagoon and riverside vegetation.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Burriana. The tourist office is the best place to ask about guided visits to the historic centre and modernisme routes, which run at certain times of year. If you want something broader, Castellón de la Plana and Valencia, a short distance away, have a much larger choice of tours and excursions.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the centre, the church and the Museu de la Taronja. If you add El Grao, the beach and the Clot de la Mare de Déu, allow a full, unhurried day. With two days you can combine it with Vila-real, next door, or a trip to the Sierra de Espadán. In March the Fallas fill the streets with monuments and music, and in September come the Misericòrdia festivities.

Where to stay

You have two clear options. The centre puts everything within walking distance and is practical if you are travelling without a car. El Grao and the beach area suit summer better, with apartments and places to stay near the sea, although in high season they fill up early. If you cannot find a room, Castellón de la Plana and Benicàssim have far more choice less than half an hour away.
