What to see in Santa Fe de Mondújar

Must-sees

Santa Fe de Mondújar is a small village in the Andarax valley, about twenty kilometres from Almería city. The big reason to come lies within its boundaries: Los Millares, one of the most important Copper Age settlements in Europe. Remains of its walls, round huts and an extensive necropolis of collective tombs survive, on a spur above the river with the Tabernas desert and Sierra Nevada in the background.

The village is quiet and agricultural, with whitewashed houses climbing up to the church of the Virgen del Rosario. Around it are the remains of a watchtower and the old castle of Mondújar, already mentioned by the geographer Al-Idrisi. The landscape of fertile plots, orange and olive trees recalls the past of the Ohanes grape, which brought prosperity to the valley in the 19th century, and of the railway, which played a pioneering role here.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Santa Fe de Mondújar. What you can do is explore Los Millares, which has a reception centre and waymarked paths, and where guided visits of the site are organised. If you prefer company, the most practical option is a trip from Almería combining the site with other spots in the valley or the Tabernas desert.

How long to spend

The village can be seen in an hour. Los Millares deserves at least two hours to explore the settlement and the necropolis without rushing, ideally early or late in the afternoon, as there is hardly any shade and the summer heat is fierce. In total, half a day is enough. If you have the whole day, you can add Alhama de Almería or continue to the Tabernas desert.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the village itself is very scarce, with a rural house or two in the valley. The most convenient option is to sleep in Almería city, about twenty minutes away by car, where you will find hotels in the centre and near the seafront. Another option with more rural atmosphere is Alhama de Almería, a few kilometres away, with small places to stay and its spa tradition.
