What to see in O Faramello

Must-sees

O Faramello is a small parish in the municipality of Rois, very close to Santiago de Compostela, known for its pazo, or Galician manor house. The place began as an industrial site: in the early 18th century a paper mill was set up here beside the small Tinto river, and the Baroque pazo was later built in the upper part of the estate, adapted to a steeply sloping site. Over time the owning family turned it into a country retreat, and King Alfonso XIII spent summers there.

Within the estate you can still make out the channels and work areas of the old mill, partly integrated into the garden. Inner paths wind among camellias and other ornamental trees to the chapel, which holds an altarpiece by the sculptor José Gambino, born in O Faramello itself. The Portuguese Way to Santiago passes in front of the pazo, and Monte do Castro Lupario rises above the parish.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in O Faramello. The pazo is privately owned and can only be visited by appointment, so the usual way in is the guided tour booked through Civitatis. It covers the house, the chapel and the gardens, tells the story of the paper mill and its former owners, and ends with a glass of wine and a tasting of local produce. Many visitors combine it with a day in Santiago.

How long to spend

The pazo visit lasts a little over an hour, so half a morning is enough. If you have time to spare, walk a stretch of the Portuguese Way nearby or visit Padrón, where you can see Rosalía de Castro's house museum. The most practical approach is to fit it into a trip to Santiago, as it's about twenty minutes away by car.

Where to stay

In the parish itself and the villages of Rois there are mainly rural houses, quiet and surrounded by meadows and woodland. If you want more services, Padrón has hotels and guesthouses on the Way and is close by. Santiago de Compostela has the widest choice of accommodation, from hotels in the historic centre to options in the newer districts, and from there you can reach the pazo quickly.
