What to see in Baena

Must-sees

Baena is in the countryside of southern Córdoba, surrounded by olive groves, and its oil has its own appellation. The old town, La Almedina, climbs to the castle, Moorish in origin and restored in recent years, which overlooks the olive landscape. Close by is the church of Santa María la Mayor, and in the lower town the Plaza de la Constitución, the heart of town life, with its manor houses and convents.

To understand the area, the Olive Grove and Oil Museum, in an old oil mill, explains traditional cultivation and production. The History Museum holds archaeological finds from the area. A few kilometres away is Torreparedones, an archaeological park with Iberian and Roman remains, including a forum and a sanctuary. Baena's Holy Week, with the sound of its drums, is its best-known festival.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Baena, but there are guided visits. The most common are at the Olive Grove and Oil Museum, often with an oil tasting, and the Torreparedones archaeological park, which makes much more sense with a guide. There are also tours of the historic centre and the castle, and excursions combining Baena with other Subbética villages.

How long to spend

Allow a day for the old town, the castle and the museums. If you add Torreparedones, which requires a car, allow a full day. With two days you can add Zuheros, Luque or Priego de Córdoba, all nearby. If you go at Easter, book well in advance, as the town fills up.

Where to stay

The most practical option is to stay in the centre, near the Plaza de la Constitución, to get around town on foot. The upper old town is quieter but hilly. Accommodation is limited, so if you can't find a room look in Zuheros, Cabra or Priego de Córdoba, or in Córdoba if you want more options and don't mind an hour's drive.
