What to see in Sotogrande

Must-sees

Sotogrande is a residential estate in the municipality of San Roque, at the eastern tip of the province of Cádiz. It is not a town with an old quarter but an area of villas, golf courses and a marina. The most visited spot is the marina, with restaurants, shops and walks beside the boats. La Ribera, by the harbour, is the centre of the nightlife.

It is known for golf and polo, with tournaments that draw crowds in summer. The beach is long, with dark sand. At the river mouth is the Guadiaro Marshes nature spot, a small wetland with birds. The historic centre of San Roque, a few kilometres away, has the church of Santa María la Coronada.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Sotogrande. The usual options are water sports, golf or polo lessons and trips to nearby places, often guided. The most interesting are Gibraltar, Tarifa, Castellar de la Frontera and Jimena de la Frontera, with their castles, and Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Whale and dolphin-watching boat trips leave from Tarifa. For a pay-what-you-wish free tour, Málaga and Cádiz are the nearest cities that run them regularly.

How long to spend

One or two days are enough for the marina, the beach and the marshes. If you stay longer, split it between the beach and day trips: one day to Gibraltar, another to Tarifa and another to Castellar and Los Alcornocales. A week lets you combine rest and sightseeing at an easy pace, leaving a free day for the marina.

Where to stay

The best choice is to stay by the marina or in La Ribera, with restaurants and walks on foot. The villa and golf areas are quieter, but almost everything requires a car. If you want lower prices, Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro and Torreguadiaro are very close and have everyday shops and bars.
