What to see in Bueu

Must-sees

Bueu is a fishing town on the Morrazo peninsula, on the south shore of the Pontevedra estuary. Life revolves around the harbour, where inshore boats still land their catch. By Banda do Río beach an old traditional boatyard survives, and close by is the Museo Massó, devoted to the canning family that had its factory here, with traditional boats, fishing gear and pieces from the old whaling industry.

The municipality has more than twenty beaches. Lapamán, Portomaior, Agrelo and Beluso are among the best known, with fine sand and calm water. Cabo Udra, part of the Natura 2000 network, is the best place for walking by the sea and seeing seabirds. The church of Santiago de Ermelo has good views over the estuary. And off the coast lies Ons island, which belongs to Bueu and is part of the Atlantic Islands National Park.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours of Bueu. What you will find are boat activities: crossings to Ons island, leaving from the harbour itself, and trips around the Pontevedra estuary. On the island you can walk the trails on your own or join the national park’s guided routes. Bear in mind that in high season visiting Ons requires prior authorisation from the Galician government, so arrange it before booking the boat.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the harbour, the promenade and the Museo Massó. If you want to go to Ons, set aside a whole day: the boat ride is short, but the island deserves an unhurried walk to its lighthouses and beaches. With a weekend you can add a morning on the beach and the Cabo Udra route. In summer the town fills up, especially at weekends.

Where to stay

Central Bueu, near the harbour, is the most convenient option if you are catching the boat to Ons, as everything is on foot. If you want peace and a beach, the parishes of Beluso and Cela have apartments and houses with estuary views. In August places go quickly; if you cannot find a room, Cangas, Sanxenxo or the city of Pontevedra are close and have much more capacity.
