What to see in Villablino

Must-sees

Villablino is the capital of the Laciana valley, in north-west León province, next to Asturias. The valley has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and combines a strong mining past with a landscape of mountains, forests and villages of traditional architecture. In the town itself is the Sierra Pambley mansion, and very close, in Robles de Laciana, the Romanesque church of San Julián.

The surrounding villages are part of the trip. In Sosas de Laciana, Lumajo or Robles you will see hórreos, cobbled streets and old shepherds' huts, some restored. The Laciana Greenway links Caboalles de Arriba, Villablino and Villaseca de Laciana and is an easy walk along the valley floor. For longer walks there are routes to glacial lakes and peaks such as the Cornón, and in winter the Leitariegos ski resort is a short distance away.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no conventional free walking tours in Villablino, but there are guided activities. You can visit a craft brewery in the valley, with an explanation of the process and a tasting, or spend a day canyoning with a guide in the rivers of Laciana. For information on routes and heritage, the practical step is to stop at the Villablino tourist office.

How long to spend

The town can be seen in a morning, but Laciana asks for more. Over a weekend you can walk the greenway, visit two or three villages and do a short mountain route. If you try canyoning or a long route such as the Cornón, allow a day for each. In winter, snow can affect access to the higher villages.

Where to stay

Villablino has most of the accommodation, with hotels, guesthouses and apartments in the centre, where all the services are. If you want peace, the valley villages, such as Sosas, Robles or Caboalles, have rural houses with more of a mountain feel. For snow, the Caboalles area is closer to Leitariegos. Ponferrada is the nearest large alternative.
