What to see in Cullera

Must-sees

Cullera is recognisable from afar by its hill, crowned by the castle and the sanctuary of the Virgen del Castillo. Walk or drive to the top to see the mouth of the Júcar, the rice fields and the line of beaches. At the foot of the hill is the old town, home to the Torre de la Reina Mora, which houses a museum on the raids of the corsair Dragut.

The beaches are the big draw. San Antonio is the most urban and lively, and El Racó, facing the bay, is also very busy. Further south are more open beaches, such as Marenyet and l'Estany, beside a lagoon. To the north, the lighthouse marks the edge of the rocky coves and a quieter area for walking.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are uncommon in Cullera. The norm is guided visits to the castle and sanctuary, and routes through the old town and the Dragut museum. There are also boat trips on the river Júcar and along the coast. The most recommended excursion is to the nearby Albufera Natural Park. There you can take a boat trip on the lake, see the rice fields and have paella in El Palmar. The city of Valencia is less than an hour away by train or car, so it is easy to add a day there.

How long to spend

Spend half a day on the hill, the castle and the old town, ideally in the morning or at sunset. With a full day you can add a beach and the Dragut museum. If you are on holiday, three or four days give you time for the beach, an afternoon at the Albufera and a day in Valencia.

Where to stay

The area around San Antonio beach and El Racó has most of the hotels and apartments. There you have the promenade, restaurants and beach at the door. If you prefer something quieter, the area around the lighthouse and the northern coves offers views and less noise. The centre, by the hill, is practical if you want to take the train to Valencia.
