What to see in Vegacervera

Must-sees

Vegacervera is a small village in the mountains of León, in the Torío river valley, about 35 kilometres from León. Its great attraction is the Hoces de Vegacervera, a narrow gorge the river has carved into the limestone, with the road running through it between vertical walls. It is very well known among climbers, who find many routes here.

The other must-see is the Valporquero cave, in the same municipality, high up the valley. A prepared route leads through chambers with stalactites, stalagmites and coloured formations, and the stream is still shaping the cave from within. In the village itself you can stroll through its stone streets and along the Torío, and around it there are hiking routes of varying difficulty.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Vegacervera. What you will find is the guided visit to the Valporquero cave, which can only be seen with a guide in groups; check the opening season before you go, as it closes for part of the year. If you are in León, there are day trips combining the cave with the gorge, a convenient option if you do not have a car.

How long to spend

An hour or two is enough for the gorge and a stroll round the village. Add the Valporquero cave and allow a long half day, counting the mountain road and the wait for your slot. With a full day you can add a walk in the Torío valley. If you are coming to climb, most people stay a weekend.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the village is limited, with a few rural houses and small places by the road and the river. Staying here lets you enter the cave first thing and drive through the gorge without traffic. If you cannot find a room, other Torío valley villages such as La Vecilla or Matallana de Torío have more options, and León is under an hour's drive away with far more choice.
